In mid-2008 Delta dove into a new frontier, they started their school called The Delta Flight Attendant Academy. It got off to a slow start, but even so, Delta has stopped the hiring of attendants from other schools. They have been training their own. We have come a long way from the Wright brother's poor attempts at trying to fly in Ohio.
Delta Airlines is required by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to make sufficnent provision for flight attendants that are trained in the safety & security of all passengers. In the flight attendants job description the flight attendant must ensure that all safety and security regulations are strictly adhered to as well as being trained to ensure customer comfort is take care of.
Delta trains their applicants in full compliance with FAA regulations. The general training stresses the instructions given to passengers before takeoff. Before going on board the flight attendants are briefed by the captain on evacuation procedures, weather conditions, length of flight, and health issues in relation to passengers. As the passengers board airplane, Delta flight attendants greet them and issue FAA required safety announcements. The announcement is pre-recorded on a CD with words and speech that has been laid down by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). They also instruct the passengers on where they can store all their carry-on baggage, and request that they fasten seat-belts, give instructions on how to use the electronic devices, and to close all tray tables.
Delta Flight attendants must have obtained a certificate that has been issued by the FAA. Minimum requirement to attend a Delta flight School is to have completed high school and to have obtained a diploma or its appropriate equivalent in a public education. Applicants who have obtained a college degree will be placed before all others to be interviewed. Other requirements that add credence to an applicant are communications, nursing, psychology, tourism, hospitality, travel, and education. A further requirement is an applicant must be proficient in at least one foreign language
On completion of training, successful applicants will have to undergo a further three to six weeks training, on matters such as becoming familiar with the companies employment policy, relationship within the company, employee status and AFA-CWA union, the union often is the one that will determine employees work schedule.
Delta flight attendants can expect to be scheduled to work for approximately 14 hours a day - and international flights will be required to follow a different criteria for scheduling. FAA regulation requirements stipulate that flight attendants should be given rest periods of 9 hours on completion of each tour of duty. Delta Airlines guarantees a minimum flight hours per month - around 80 hours. Delta attendants must be willing to relocate. Expectations in the future of flight attendants is expected to grow by 8%. Competition for the post of flight attendant is fierce and the situation now stands that there is more than enough applicants then there are jobs.
